actuallyiwassohonorediwantedtodosomethingreallyspecialforyou.iwantedtobeabletohaveyoulookunderyourseatsandtherewouldbefreemasteranddoctordegreesbutiseeyougotthatcoveredalready.iwillbehonestwithyou.ifeltalotofpressureoverthepastfewweekstocomeupwithsomethingthaticouldsharewithyouthatyouhadn'theardbeforebecauseafterallyouallwenttoharvard,ididnot.butthenirealizedthatyoudon'thavetonecessarilygotoharvardtohaveadrivenobsessivetypeapersonality.butithelps.andwhileimaynothavegraduatedfromhereiadmitthatmypersonalityisaboutasharvardastheycome.youknowmytelevisioncareerbeganunexpectedly.asyouheardthismorningiwasinthemissfirepreventioncontest.thatwaswheniwas16yearsoldinnashville,tennesseeandyouhadtherequirementofhavingtohaveredhairinordertowinupuntiltheyearthatientered.sotheyweredoingthequestionandanswerperiodbecauseiknewiwasn'tgoingtowinundertheswimsuitcompetition.soduringthequestionandanswerperiodthequestioncame"why,younglady,whatwouldyouliketobewhenyougrowup?"andbythetimetheygottomeallthegoodanswersweregone.soihadseenbarbarawaltersonthetodayshowthatmorningsoianswered"iwouldliketobeajournalist.iwouldliketotellotherpeople'sstoriesinawaythatmakesadifferenceintheirlivesandtheworld."andasthosewordswerecomingoutofmymouthiwentwhoa!thisisprettygood!iwouldliketobeajournalist.iwanttomakeadifference.welliwasontelevisionbythetimeiwas19yearsold.andin1986ilaunchedmyowntelevisionshowwitharelentlessdeterminationtosucceedatfirst.iwasnervousaboutthecompetitionandthenibecamemyowncompetitionraisingthebareveryyear,pushing,pushing,pushingmyselfashardasiknew.soundfamiliartoanybodyhere?eventuallywedidmakeittothetopandwestayedtherefor25years.

ishallwalkdecisively.thisiswhatiwanttoshare.itdoesn'tmatterhowfaryoumightrise.atsomepointyouareboundtostumblebecauseifyou'reconstantlydoingwhatwedo,raisingthebar.ifyou'reconstantlypushingyourselfhigher,higherthelawofaveragesnottomentionthemythoficaruspredictsthatyouwillatsomepointfall.andwhenyoudoiwantyoutoknowthis,rememberthis:thereisnosuchthingasfailure.failureisjustlifetryingtomoveusinanotherdirection.nowwhenyou'redownthereinthehole,itlookslikefailure.sothispastyearihadtospoonfeedthosewordstomyself.andwhenyou'redowninthehole,whenthatmomentcomes,it'sreallyokaytofeelbadforalittlewhile.giveyourselftimetomournwhatyouthinkyoumayhavelostbutthenhere'sthekey,learnfromeverymistakebecauseeveryexperience,encounter,andparticularlyyourmistakesaretheretoteachyouandforceyouintobeingmorewhoyouare.andthenfigureoutwhatisthenextrightmove.andthekeytolifeistodevelopaninternalmoralemotionalg.p.s.thatcantellyouwhichwaytogo.becausenowandforevermorewhenyougoogleyourselfyoursearchresultswillread"harvard,XX".andinaverycompetitiveworldthatreallyisacallingcardbecauseicantellyouasonewhoemploysalotofpeoplewhenisee"harvard"isitupalittlestraighterandsay"whereisheorshe?bringthemin."it'sanimpressivecallingcardthatcanleadtoevenmoreimpressivebulletsintheyearsahead:lawyer,senator,c.e.o.,scientist,physicist,winnersofnobelandpulitzerprizesorlatenighttalkshowhost.butthechallengeoflifeihavefoundistobuildaresumethatdoesn'tsimplytellastoryaboutwhatyouwanttobebutit'sastoryaboutwhoyouwanttobe.it'saresumethatdoesn'tjusttellastoryaboutwhatyouwanttoaccomplishbutwhy.astorythat'snotjustacollectionoftitlesandpositionsbutastorythat'sreallyaboutyourpurpose.becausewhenyouinevitablystumbleandfindyourselfstuckinaholethatisthestorythatwillgetyouout.whatisyourtruecalling?whatisyourdharma?whatisyourpurpose?formethatdiscoverycamein1994wheniinterviewedalittlegirlwhohaddecidedtocollectpocketchangeinordertohelpotherpeopleinneed.sheraisedathousanddollarsallbyherselfandithoughtwellifthatlittle9yearoldgirlwithabucketandbigheartcoulddothatiwonderwhaticoulddo?soiaskedforourviewerstotakeuptheirownchangecollectionandinonemonthjustfrompenniesandnickelsanddimesweraisedmorethanthreemilliondollarsthatweusedtosendonestudentfromeverystateintheunitedstatestocollege.thatwasthebeginningoftheangelnetwork.

andsowhatididwasisimplyaskedourviewers"dowhatyoucanwhereveryouare,fromwhereveryousitinlife.givemeyourtimeoryourtalentyourmoneyifyouhaveit."andtheydid.extendyourselfinkindnesstootherhumanbeingswhereveryoucan.andtogetherwebuilt55schoolsin12differentcountriesandrestorednearly300homesthatweredevastatedbyhurricanesritaandkatrina.sotheangelnetworkihavebeenontheairforalongtime,butitwastheangelnetworkthatactuallyfocusedmyinternalg.p.s.ithelpedmetodecidethatiwasn'tgoingtojustbeontveverydaybutthatthegoalofmyshows,myinterviews,mybusiness,myphilanthropyallofit,whateverventuresimightpursuewouldbetomakeclearthatwhatunitesusisultimatelyfarmoreredeemingandcompellingthananythingthatseparatesme.becausewhathadbecomecleartomeandiwantyoutoknowitisn'talwaysclearinthebeginningbecauseasisaidihadbeenontelevisionsinceiwas19yearsold.butaround'94igotreallyclear.sodon'texpecttheclaritytocomeallatoncetoknowyourpurposerightaway,butwhatbecamecleartomewasthatiwashereonearthtousetelevisionandnotbeusedbyit;tousetelevisiontoilluminatethetranscendentpowerofourbetterangels.sothisangelnetwork,itdidn'tjustchangethelivesofthosewhowerehelped,butthelivesofthosewhoalsodidthehelping.itremindedusthatnomatterwhoweareorwhatwelooklikeorwhatwemaybelieveitisbothpossibleandmoreimportantlyitbecomespowerfultocometogetherincommonpurposeandcommoneffort.isawsomethingonthebillmooreshowrecentlythatsoremindedmeofthispoint.itwasaninterviewwithdavidandfrancinewheeler.theylosttheir7yearoldson,beninthesandyhooktragedy.andeventhoughgunsafetylegislationtostrengthenbackgroundcheckshadjustbeenvoteddownincongressatthetimethattheyweredoingthisinterviewtheytalkedabouthowtheyrefusedtobediscouraged.francinesaidthis,shesaid"ourheartsarebrokenbutourspiritsarenot.i'mgoingtotellthemwhatit'sliketofindaconversationaboutchangethatislove,andi'mgoingtodothatwithoutfightingthem."andthenherhusbanddavidaddedthis,"yousimplycannotdemonizeorvilifysomeonewhodoesn'tagreewithyou,becausetheminuteyoudothat,yourdiscussionisover.andwecannotdothatanylonger.theproblemistooenormous.therehastobesomewaythatthisdarknesscanbebanishedwithlight."inourpoliticalsystemandinthemediaweoftenseethereflectionofacountrythatispolarized,thatisparalyzedandisself-interested.andyet,iknowyouknowthetruth.weallknowthatwearebetterthanthecynicismandthepessimismthatisregurgitatedthroughoutwashingtonandthe24-hourcablenewscycle.notmychannel,bytheway.weunderstandthatthevastmajorityofpeopleinthiscountrybelieveinstrongerbackgroundchecksbecausetheyrealizethatwecanupholdthesecondamendmentandalsoreducetheviolencethatisrobbingusofourchildren.theydon'thavetobeincompatible.

andweunderstandthatmostamericansbelieveinaclearpathtocitizenshipforthe12,000,000undocumentedimmigrantswhoresideinthiscountrybecauseit'spossibletobothenforceourlawsandatthesametimeembracethewordsonthestatueoflibertythathavewelcomedgenerationsofhuddledmassestoourshores.wecandoboth.

andweunderstand.iknowyoudobecauseyouwenttoharvard.therearepeoplefrombothpartiesandnopartybelievethatindigentmothersandfamiliesshouldhaveaccesstohealthyfoodandaroofovertheirheadsandastrongpubliceducationbecausehereintherichestnationonearthwecanaffordabasiclevelofsecurityandopportunity.sothequestioniswhatarewegoingtodoaboutit?reallywhatareyougoingtodoaboutit?maybeyouagreewiththesebeliefs.maybeyoudon't.maybeyoucareabouttheseissuesandmaybethereareotherchallengesthatyou,classofXX,arepassionateabout.maybeyouwanttomakeadifferencebyservingingovernment.maybeyouwanttolaunchyourowntelevisionshow.ormaybeyousimplywanttocollectsomechange.yourparentswouldappreciatethataboutnow.thepointisyourgenerationischargedwiththistaskofbreakingthroughwhatthebodypolitichasthusfarmadeimpervioustochange.eachofyouhasbeenblessedwiththisenormousopportunityofattendingthisprestigiousschool.younowhaveachancetobetteryourlife,thelivesofyourneighborsandalsothelifeofourcountry.whenyoudothatletmetellyouwhatiknowforsure.that'swhenyourstorygetsreallygood.mayaangeloualwayssays"whenyoulearn,teach.whenyouget,give.thatmyfriendsiswhatgivesyourstorypurposeandmeaning."soyouallhavethepowerinyourownwaytodevelopyourownangelnetworkandindoingsoyourclasswillbearmedwithmoretoolsofinfluenceandempowermentthananyothergenerationinhistory.ididitinananalogworld.iwasblessedwithaplatformthatatitsheightreachednearly20,000,000viewersaday.nowhereinaworldoftwitterandfacebookandyoutubeandtumbler,youcanreachbillionsinjustseconds.you'rethegenerationthatrejectedpredictionsaboutyourdetachmentandyourdisengagementbyshowinguptovoteinrecordnumbersinXX.andwhenthepunditssaidtheysaidtheytalkedaboutyou,theysaidyou'dbetoodisappointed,you'dbetoodejectedtorepeatthatsamekindofturnoutinXXelectionandyouprovedthemwrongbyshowingupinevengreaternumbers.that'swhoyouare.

thisgenerationyourgenerationiknowhasdevelopedafinelyhonedradarforb.s.canyousay"b.s."atharvard?thespinandphoninessandartificialnastinessthatsaturatessomuchofournationaldebate.iknowyouallunderstandbetterthanmostthatrealprogressrequiresauthentic-anauthenticwayofbeing,honesty,andaboveallempathy.ihavetosaythatthesinglemostimportantlessonilearnedin25yearstalkingeverysingledaytopeoplewasthatthereisacommondenominatorinourhumanexperience.mostofusitellyouwedon'twanttobedivided.whatwewant,thecommondenominatorthatifoundineverysingleinterview,iswewanttobevalidated.wewanttobeunderstood.ihavedoneover35,000interviewsinmycareerandassoonasthatcamerashutsoffeveryonealwaysturnstomeandinevitablyintheirownwayasksthisquestion"wasthatokay?"ihearditfrompresidentbush,ihearditfrompresidentobama.i'vehearditfromheroesandfromhousewives.i'vehearditfromvictimsandperpetratorsofcrimes.ievenhearditfrombeyonceandallofherbeyonceness.shefinishesperforming,handsmethemicrophoneandsays"wasthatokay?"friendsandfamily,yours,enemies,strangersineveryargumentineveryencounter,everyexchangeiwilltellyoutheyallwanttoknowonething:wasthatokay?didyouhearme?doyouseeme?didwhatisaymeananythingtoyou?andeventhoughthisisacollegewherefacebookwasbornmyhopeisthatyouwouldtrytogooutandhavemoreface-to-faceconversationswithpeopleyoumaydisagreewith.
