mr.president,membersofthesenateoftheunitedstates,ladiesandgentlemen,iamoverwhelmedbythewarmthandspontaneityofthewelcomeoftheamericanpeople,ofwhomyouaretherepresentatives.ididnotknowthatiwastospeaktoyoutodayatthesenateexcepttosay,“howdoyoudo?iamsoverygladtoseeyou,andtobringthegreetingstomypeopletothepeopleofamerica.however,justbeforecominghere,thevicepresidenttoldmethathewouldliketohavemesayafewwordstoyou.

ibelieve,however,thatitisnotonlyiwhoamcominghome;ifeelthatifthechinesepeoplecouldspeaktoyouinyourowntongue,orifyoucouldunderstandourtongue,theywouldtellyouthatbasicallyandfundamentallywearefightingforthesamecause[greatapplause];thatwehaveidentityofideals’thatthe“fourfreedoms,whichyourpresidentproclaimedtotheworld,resoundthroughoutourvastlandasthegongoffreedom,thegongoffreedomoftheunitednations,andthedeathknelloftheaggressors.[applause.]
iassureyouthatourpeoplearewillingandeagertocooperatewithyouintherealizationoftheseideals,becausewewanttoseetoitthattheydonotechoasemptyphrases,butbecomerealitiesforourselves,foryourchildren,forourchildren’schildren,andforallmankind.[applause.]
howarewegoingtorealizetheseideals?ithinkishalltellyoualittlestorywhichjustcametomymind.asyouknow,chinaisaveryoldnation.wehaveahistoryof5,000years.whenwewereobligedtoevacuatehankowandgointothehinterlandtocarryonandcontinueourresistanceagainstaggression,thegeneralissimoandipassedoneofourfronts,thechangshafront.onedaywewentintotheheng-yangmountains,wheretherearetracesofafamouspavilioncalled“rub-the-mirrorpavilion,whichperhapsinterestyoutohearthestoryofthatpavilion.
