themasscampaignsofdefianceandotheractionsofourorganizationsandpeoplecanonlyculminateintheestablishmentofcontinentisincalculable.thefabricoffamilylifeofmillionsofmypeoplehasbeenshattered.millionsarehomelessandunemployed.oureconomy—oureconomyliesinruinsandourpeopleareembroiledinpoliticalstrife.ourresorttothearmedstrugglein1960withtheformationofthemilitarywingoftheanc,umkhontowesizwe,wasapurelydefensiveactionagainsttheviolenceofapartheid.thefactorswhichnecessitatedthearmedstrugglestillexisttoday.wehavenooptionbuttocontinue.weexpressthehopethataclimateconducivetoanegotiatedsettlementwillbecreatedsoonsothattheremaynolongerbetheneedforthearmed,strategies,and,ifeelduty?boundtomakethepointthataleaderofthemovementisapersonwhohasbeendemocraticallyelectedatanationalconference.thisisaprinciplewhichmustbeupheldwithoutany,iwishtoreporttoyouthatmytalkswiththegovernmenthavebeenaimedatnormalizingthepoliticalsituationinthecountry.wehavenotasyetbegundiscussingthebasicdemandsofthestruggle.iwishtostressthatimyselfhaveatnotimeenteredintonegotiationsaboutthefutureofourcountryexcepttoinsistonameetingbetweentheancandthehasgonefurtherthananyothernationalistpresidentintakingrealstepstonormalizethesituation.however,therearefurthersteps,asoutlinedinthehararedeclaration,thathavetobemetbeforenegotiationsonthebasicdemandsofourpeoplecanbegin.ireiterateourcallfor,interalia,theimmediateendingofthestateofemergencyandthefreeingofall,andnotonlysome,politicalprisoners.onlysuchanormalizedsituation,whichallowsforfreepoliticalactivity,canallowustoconsultourpeopleinordertoobtainamandate.thepeopleneedtobeconsultedonwhowillnegotiateandonthecontentofsuchnegotiations.negotiationscannottakeplace—negotiationscannottakeplaceabovetheheadsorbehindthebacksofourpeople.itisourbeliefthatthefutureofourcountrycanonlybedeterminedbyabodywhichisdemocraticallyelectedonanon?racialbasis.negotiationsonthedismantlingofapartheidwillhavetoaddresstheoverwhelmingdemandsofourpeopleforademocratic,non?racialandunitarysouthafrica.theremustbeanendtowhitemonopolyonpoliticalpowerandafundamentalrestructuringofourpoliticalandeconomicsystemstoensurethattheinequalitiesofapartheidareaddressedandoursocietythoroughly,webaseourpolicyandstrategyontheharshrealitywearefacedwith.andthisrealityisthatwearestillsufferingunderthepoliciesofthenationalist,sothattheprocesstowardsdemocracyisrapidanduninterrupted.wehavewaitedtoolongforourfreedom.wecannolongerwait.nowisthetimetointensifythestruggleonallfronts.torelaxoureffortsnowwouldbeamistakewhichgenerationstocomewillnotbeableto?roleinauniteddemocraticandnon?racialsouthafricaistheonlywaytopeaceandracialharmony.inconclusion,iwishtoquotemyownwordsduringmytrialin1964.theyareastruetodayastheywerethen.ispoke:ihavefoughtagainstwhitedominationandihavefoughtagainstblackdomination.ihavecherishedtheidealofademocraticandfreesocietyinwhichallpersonslivetogetherinharmonyand—andwithequalopportunities.itisanidealwhichihopetoliveforandtoachieve.butifneedsbe,itisanidealforwhichiampreparedtodie.
