itwas238yearsagothatourfounderscametogetherinphiladelphiatolaunchouramericanexperiment.therewerefarmersandbusinessmen,doctorsandlawyers,ministersandakite-flyingscientist.
thoseearlypatriotsmayhavecomefromdifferentbackgroundsanddifferentwalksoflife.buttheywereunitedbyabeliefinasimpletruth--thatweareallcreatedequal;thatweareallendowedbyourcreatorwithcertaininalienablerights;andthatamongtheserightsarelife,libertyandthepursuitofhappiness.
overtheyears,thatbeliefhassustainedusthroughwaranddepression;peaceandprosperity.it’shelpedusbuildthestrongestdemocracy,thegreatestmiddleclass,andthemostpowerfulmilitarytheworldhaseverknown.andtoday,thereisn’tanationonearththatwouldn’tgladlytradeplaceswiththeunitedstatesofamerica.
butoursuccessisonlypossiblebecausewehavenevertreatedthoseself-evidenttruthsasself-executing.generationsofamericanshavemarched,organized,petitioned,foughtandevendiedtoextendthoserightstoothers;towidenthecircleofopportunityforothers;andtoperfectthisunionwelovesomuch.
that’swhyiwanttosayaspecialthankstothemenandwomenofourarmedforcesandthefamilieswhoservewiththem--especiallythoseservicememberswhospentthismostamericanofholidaysservingyourcountryfarfromhome.
youkeepussafe,andyoukeeptheunitedstatesofamericaashiningbeaconofhopefortheworld.andforthat,youandyourfamiliesdeservenotonlytheappreciationofagratefulnation,butourenduringcommitmenttoserveyouaswellasyou’veservedus.
